Vancouver Sun Room Addition

Cliff wrapped up the bulk of the trim work.  Notably, his simulated v-groove T&G (tongue and groove) made from sheets of 1/2″ mdf.  This stuff will paint up perfectly and there will be no expansion cracks like there would be with 1×6 or 1×4 T&G.  All the credit goes to Cliff for this cool idea.  I should also point out the ridiculously awesome job he did making his own custom trim to go around the half round windows.  Is there nothing he can’t do?

Washougal Kitchen Remodel

Surprises happen in remodeling, and usually not the good kind.  We knew going in that the attachment of the deck to the house wasn’t done right, but until we tore into it we didn’t know the extent of the problem.  Unfortunately, much of the west side of the house was rotted at the bottom 6″ of the wall.  We had to remove the existing deck ledger, cut back the deck joists and then remove the bad stuff.  There were several problems with the way it was installed, but the biggest by far was that the deck ledger was attached directly to the plywood sheathing with no flashing and the Hardi-plank siding was actually touching the decking (Hardi recommends a 2 inch gap).  Anyway, Drew did a great job repairing the damage and putting it back together the right way.

Inside, the hardwood floor was patched where the existing wall between the kitchen and dining was removed.  The floor was sanded and two coats of finish applied.  I went a little out of order by doing the wood floor before the sheetrock patching, but due to my subs busy schedules I had to press on.  Since it’s a relatively small space, we can easily protect the floor during drywall.

Washougal Patio Cover

What a soggy week!  Nonetheless, Jason and Cody still managed to get the roof and skylites on.  Now we wait until we get a few dry days so we can paint.

Kudos to Jason, Drew and Cody for their attention to detail on the framing.  The rafters are going to be exposed and painted, requiring finish work level framing work.  (Side note: these guys frame like finish carpenters even when the framing is going to be covered!)
