I love designing, building, gardening and farming.  I’ve often dreamed of combining these interests in my work.  I’m happy to announce that I’m getting that chance!
I’d like to introduce Project Homestead
One of my longtime clients who shares my interests in self-sufficiency, gardening and design  is ready to start planning their retirement home in the San Juan Islands of Washington State.  Fortunately, their idea of retirement isn’t playing golf every day!
Early this year they purchased a nearly 40 acre site—with a very gentle slope, approximately 2 acres of trees along the north property line and great southern exposure—with the idea of designing and building a modern homestead, incorporating permaculture concepts, sustainable and self-sufficient energy systems such as geothermal heating and solar PV.
Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t going to be the Little House on the Prairie —the house will be modern and well-appointed.  Maybe not quite a luxury homestead but I’m sure Ma and Pa Ingalls would have considered it to be Shangri-La.
I hope you’ll follow along with us on our adventure as we work through the design and planning process with the goal of breaking ground in the Spring of 2014.
Thanks for reading!
