Contemporary Craftsman in Camas
Collaboration
This was a really fun project. Tim and Amanda came to us by way of an article in Oregon Home magazine that featured a beach house we had built a few years earlier. They were looking for a local Camas builder who understood their vision for their dream home on 6 acres in the Fern Prairie area. They had architectural plans, but there were many details remaining to work out so it was important to them to work with a builder who could see the vision and help them carry it out.
Some of my early suggestions were to use tongue and groove cedar for the eaves the way a craftsman home may have been built in the 1920’s and to forego corner boards at the cedar shake siding. These ideas resonated with them and we were off and running!
Finishes
The cabinets are CVG fir with shaker style doors (what else would you put in a Craftsman!). Some of the other interesting details are finish in place bamboo floors, a plaster coated chimney, real brick wood burning fireplace and a hand applied drywall texture that simulates the look of old school plaster.
Master bath
In the master bath we used travertine tile with glass subway tile accents. The vanity has a limestone slab counter with maple edge and splash. The mirror frames are also maple.
Kitchen
The spacious kitchen has Slatescape (pre-fabricated cement) and maple butcher block counters and commercial style stainless steel appliances.
Although this home was finished in 2002, we think it still holds up well. It has a lot of timeless elements to it, while also taking some risks. It was a joy to build such a one of kind home.
