Starting a home project can feel overwhelming. Most people aren’t sure what the first step should be or when to bring a builder into the mix. That’s why one of the questions we hear most often is, “How do we get started?”
The process always begins with a conversation. When you first reach out, you’ll usually talk with Debora. She’ll ask a few questions to understand your goals, the type of project you’re planning, where you are in the design process, and what kind of timeline you have in mind. This helps us make sure your project is a good fit before we take the next step.
If it sounds like we might be a match, we’ll schedule a follow-up call so I can learn more about your vision. I like to hear the story behind your project, what’s driving it, what isn’t working now, and what a successful outcome would look like for you. From there, I’ll outline what a design/build process would look like for your situation and talk through next steps.
Most of our clients come to us before they’ve hired a designer or architect, and for many projects, that’s the best approach. Kitchens, baths, and smaller additions are usually most efficient when we lead the design process directly. It keeps everything coordinated from concept through construction and ensures that what’s drawn can actually be built within the desired budget.
On larger or more complex projects, like full custom homes or extensive remodels, it sometimes makes sense for a client to begin with an architect. In those cases, we prefer to come on board early in design, often while plans are still developing, so we can help align costs, coordinate details, and prevent surprises later. That was the case with our Camas Hilltop House project, where we joined the team during structural engineering. That early collaboration set the stage for a smooth build and well-coordinated design.
For most projects, the next formal step after our initial conversations is a Design Agreement. This is where we start developing ideas, exploring budget ranges, and outlining a clear path forward. The design phase sets the tone for the entire project. It’s where we make the decisions that determine how smoothly construction goes later on.
Our goal from the very first conversation is to make sure expectations are clear. Starting a project is exciting, but it’s also a big commitment. We want you to understand the process, the timeline, and what it’s like to work with us before you sign anything.
If you’re thinking about a project, the best first step is simple: reach out. We’ll start with a conversation and take it from there.
